Hi
I installed the packaged version of mangler from mangler_0.0.20091031-1_i386.deb.. with this version it can connect to the server but gets disconnected right away…

I then downloaded and installed mangler_1.0.1_i386.deb, but when I try to connect to a server it hangs and displays "Checking Server License" in the GUI, and this in the terminal:
libventrilo3: 12:42:39.955302: —> v3_login()
libventrilo3: 12:42:39.955473: parsed server name: ***
libventrilo3: 12:42:39.955490: parsed server port: *****
libventrilo3: 12:42:39.955549: —> v3_queue_event()
libventrilo3: 12:42:39.955572: client does appear to be listening yet… not queueing
libventrilo3: 12:42:39.955587: _v3_init_decoders()
libventrilo3: 12:42:40.086124: v3_queue_event()
libventrilo3: 12:42:40.086277: queued event type 0. now have 1 event in queue
libventrilo3: 12:42:40.086293: _v3_server_auth()
libventrilo3: 12:42:40.086353: checking version of **.***.***.***:*****
libventrilo3: 12:42:40.148598: Server Name : ***
libventrilo3: 12:42:40.148640: Server OS : WIN32
libventrilo3: 12:42:40.148657: Server Version: 3.0.3.C

the * I have put in, they are correct IP and hostname…

I even tried to install the latest developer snapshot, but that gives the same result..

I know the server works, because several other people I know can connect without problems using the ventrilo client, I even tried another server which gave the exact same result

Anybody got an idea what I could do?

That's a really, really, really, really old version :). Remove that package and go to the Download page and get the latest release version or the latest developer snapshot. You should use at least 1.0.1 or 1.1.20091201 installed.

That version you're using barely works.

I fail at reading all the way through your post :).

Do you have a firewall enabled at all? Ventrilo requires UDP port 6100 to be open IIRC.

I haven't got any firewall on ubuntu, as far as I can find..

I know that it isn't the wireless router, but it might be something from my ISP that blocks it..

I'll have to check that, thanks for the suggestion

OK, just tried installing mangler on a laptop connected to my net.. It can connect just fine, so it must be something on my PC that is messed up..

When I installed the 1.0.1 version I didn't uninstall the old version, could this be an issue..? if it is, then how can I remove everything to try again..?
apt-get remove mangler
rm -rf /usr/lib/libventrilo3* /usr/local/lib/libventrilo3*
rm -rf /usr/bin/mangler /usr/local/bin/mangler
Right, tried that it didn't work..

well it worked, but it didn't solve my problem…

could there be anything I missed?

- I haven't installed nor setup any kind of firewall
- I know its not the network because I could connect with my laptop
- I've tried a complete removal (though the settings and server info was still there after I reinstalled)

You can remove the ~/.manglerrc file to remove the settings.

I know you said the hostname/ip and port are correct… i'm sure you would have triple checked this by now. You can snoop for IP packets to see if you're getting responses:

As root:
tcpdump port 6100

then try to connect. You should see something like this:
12:35:39.563518 IP 192.168.0.100.35785 > 72.51.46.31.6100: UDP, length 132
12:35:39.563531 IP 192.168.0.100.35785 > 64.34.178.178.6100: UDP, length 132
12:35:39.563539 IP 192.168.0.100.35785 > 74.54.61.194.6100: UDP, length 132
12:35:39.563546 IP 192.168.0.100.35785 > 70.85.110.242.6100: UDP, length 132
12:35:39.604488 IP 72.51.46.31.6100 > 192.168.0.100.35785: UDP, length 108
12:35:39.637015 IP 74.54.61.194.6100 > 192.168.0.100.35785: UDP, length 108
12:35:39.641360 IP 70.85.110.242.6100 > 192.168.0.100.35785: UDP, length 108
12:35:39.669029 IP 64.34.178.178.6100 > 192.168.0.100.35785: UDP, length 108
Tried the packet snooping and got this:
18:18:48.648935 IP mathias-desktop.local.38942 > 72.51.46.31.6100: UDP, length 132
18:18:48.648974 IP mathias-desktop.local.38942 > 64.34.178.178.6100: UDP, length 132
18:18:48.648995 IP mathias-desktop.local.38942 > c2.3d.364a.static.theplanet.com.6100: UDP, length 132
18:18:48.649015 IP mathias-desktop.local.38942 > f2.6e.5546.static.theplanet.com.6100: UDP, length 132
I even tried installing ventrilo, and running it through wine but that can't connect either…

Looks like a network or firewall problem to me.

Your right..

I cleared my network information (IP, DNS etc.) and now everything works again…

I have no idea what caused the problem in the first place, since I haven't messed with the network settings for nearly 6 month.. It could be the Ubuntu upgrade to v9.10 that messed something up, but not sure..

Mangler 1.0.1 works fine with servers that support ventrilo version 3.0.
On servers running only with version 2.1 mangler refuses to connect.

thanks for the reply, but that isn't an issue..
here is the output i get when running mangler in a terminal:
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.267280: ---> v3_login()
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.267451: parsed server name: helium.typefrag.com
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.267468: parsed server port: 38140
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.267525: ---> v3_queue_event()
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.267549: client does appear to be listening yet... not queueing
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.267564: _v3_init_decoders()
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.321051: v3_queue_event()
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.321208: queued event type 0. now have 1 event in queue
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.321222: _v3_server_auth()
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.321285: checking version of 78.129.199.240:38140
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.383434: Server Name : Raiding Alliance Vent
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.383476: Server OS : WIN32
libventrilo3: 12:21:38.383491: Server Version: 3.0.3.C
as you can see the server is version 3.0.3

And the problem has reappeared.. it is prob. a network issue but I haven't touched that since last I got mangler to work so maybe I should get in touch with my ISP and see if they change things on a regular basis…
