Headset and Speakers

Running Ubuntu 9.10 and wine-1.1.39 with in onboard Intel HDA sound card and USB headset.

I can have sounds from Mangler and Wow through either the speakers or the headset, but trying to listen to a conversation while things are exploding in my ear is difficult.

Is there a way to have Wow play through my speakers and Mangler through my headset?

Set up wine to use the sound card your speakers are on and keep Mangler on the usb headset.

Since you are on Ubuntu and probably using Pulseaudio, this can easily be done by starting pavucontrol and moving the wine-stream to the other sound card.

Well, I've tried pavucontro, padevchoose, gnome-volume-control; the only thing I haven't tried is Wine audio settings. I'll give it a try.

All I see in Wine are drivers. Alsa, OSS, Jack and ESD.

You can build Wine, or install it, with a Pulseaudio driver.

However, you will still have the same issue.  When I play WoW while on Mangler, I turn my sound in WoW to around 30% volume so I can hear while 24 people blow stuff up in my face.  This is pretty much the only way youre going to be able to hear people speak.  Usually I'll even turn the sound completely off, since having coversations with people I've known for years is better than the same exploding crap in my ears.

In Mangler's settings, under the audio tab, select your output (and input) device to be your USB headset and make sure the audio subsystem is PulseAudio.

My bad, I clearly read that wrong.

The only options in Mangler I have are:

Input:
Default
Monitor of Adapter Analog Stereo
Audio Adapter Analog Stereo
Monitor of Internal Analog Surround 7.1

Output:
Default
Audio Adapter Analog Stereo
Internal Analog Surround 7.1

What about the pdsp option? I wonder if I can set Wine to OSS and use padsp wine <program>?

Well, that's no optimum, but doable. If there is not a fairly easy way to do it, I'll just turn the game volume down.

Your USB doesn't show up in the list, eh?  That's odd.  What kind of headset is it?

What is the output of "pactl list sources"

Well, it's kind of long. I see some Alsa entries for the usb headset, so Alsa recognizes it. It's just a Best Buy Dynex cheapie, but it works well:

Well, it's kind of long. I see some Alsa entries for the usb headset, so Alsa recognizes it. It's just a Best Buy Dynex cheapie, but it works well

It appears that your headset identifies itself as just "Audio Adapater."  So set your input/output devices to the Audio Adapter option.
