Using Mepis 8.0 (based on Debian Lenny)

I'm trying to install Mangler 1.2.0 from the 'tar.gz' file. './configure' wants GTK+-2.0 >=2.16.0. I have 2.12.12 installed (the latest my distro version has). The file "pkg-config" is mentioned as an alternative. I don't want to chance breaking something. How would I use "pkg-config" to get 2.12.12 accepted? Or is there another way around this?

Mangler will not run with GTK+ 2.12.  GTK+ 2.16 or higher is required (hence the error message).

Kind of afraid of that. So, how do I get 2.16 installed if it's not in the repository. Or was Mangler not intended to be used with Debian Lenny?
