Would there be any extra packages I should install to get things to work properly for PulseAudio?

Unless you've intentionally attempted to remove PulseAudio from your system, everything you need is already installed. A monitor is basically sending the output of one audio destination to an input destination. You shouldn't be using a monitor of anything (unless you're trying to send music to vent or something).

That was the only thing transmitting. Everything else gives me the yellow finger, so to speak.

In that case, your pulseaudio configuration is incorrect.

So how do I reconfigure it?

After convincing System Test to work properly, I get a fail in my mic working, and I have no internal mic.

You should probably ask how to configure your Mic as the default input device on the Ubuntu forums.
