I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. Love the new replacement for Vent, great work. I'm not sure my problem is in your program, but I don't know what to do. I have headphones w/mic plugged into the front of my PC. I can hear everyone talk just fine, but no one can hear me.
Can anyone walk me through how to find my mic in 9.10 and get Mangler set up so I can talk? I see my icon turn green when I press push to talk button, so the program is working, obviously my mic isn't set up right somewhere.

Go to System -> Preferences -> Sound
Go to the "Input" tab.
Make sure it's not muted and adjust the level as required.

Nothing is muted, I'm obviously just missing a setting somewhere, 9.10 changed the sound interface and I don't see front mic anymore, just mic 1, mic 2., etc. Hope someone can point me in the right direction as to what to set up and how.

Do you get any level reading at all on the Input meter in the sound prefs? Does it work via Sound Recorder or anything like that?
I use a USB headset, so I'm not sure what you need to set for the sound card mic jack.

First, it's not plugged into the sound card, it's plugged into front input jacks on my PC, a large panel that has usb jacks, mic/headphone jacks, etc.
Second, exactly what volume are you asking about? Which tab, which option? Nothing sows a mixer style sound gauge going up and down as sounds play. Just controls to set volume level, which are all set about 50%.

Input tab on sound preferences shows input volume at 50%, nothing (ever) on input level, connector microphone 1 (other options are microphone 2 and line in), and device is Internal Audio Analog Stereo (and a lot of other choices for that in another tab).
My culprit is here somewhere, but what?

The front jack is just a convenience jack that ends up back at the sound card via internal wiring in your case.
When I go to System -> Preferences -> Sound, then click on the Input tab and select my sound card, I have an input volume slider and a mute checkbox.
Below that I have an "Input Level" VU display that shows the current input level. When I talk (into my USB mic), that VU display shows the current input level.
Below that I have a "connector" drop down box. Have you tried the various connectors? Maybe MIC2 is your front jack?
If you're not getting anything under Input Level for any of those connectors, you may want to ask on the Ubuntu forums.

ok, no option to select a sound card, but using mic 2 shows input level doing things, but still no one can hear me, so I suppose i'm off to ubuntu forums for an answer … got a feeling it's something simple, just gotta find it

If you're getting a level in there, then it's not an Ubuntu problem.
I assume you have the proper device selected in the Settings -> Audio Tab in Mangler?

In Mangler, input and output devices are set to default, only 1 other option shows, Internal audio analog surround 5.0.
That option can be changed in sound prefs, where there are a lot of analog stereo / digital / surround options.

Hrmm… default should be fine. Try recording audio in sound recorder:
Applications -> Sound & Video -> Sound Recorder

Also asking in ubuntu forums … did system – admin – system testing. Tried first mic test, cannot get anything to play back. Only 1 device is available to choose. Not sure how to get this working now.

ok, solved problem by avoiding it … I have an old USB headphone I plugged in and it works fine, so no real need to find the other problem, tho I may still work on it from time to time to figure it out.
Love the new program, I'm already passing the word!

I, for one, don't happen to have a USB headset laying around. As such, I would DEARLY love to figure out a solution to the problem. I've tried running Ubuntu's System Test, and it's just kinda sitting there…thinking… And I could get Sound Recorder to work.
I'm on a laptop, so I don't have convenience jacks, the jacks are the only things I have. I'm going out of my mind on this. Any help?

Does your mic work in any other application?

Sound Recorder, and at one point I had it working with Vent in Wine.

10.04. I've tried doing the System test, and it's just hanging. Doesn't even want to close. I'll have to try it again later.

On Ubuntu, you should be using the PulseAudio subsystem. You may need to modify your audio configuration to use your headset in the audio settings. If you can see levels in the audio config, it should work in Mangler.

And how would I go about finding this? And the only thing that allows me to transmit at all is Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Sterio. And yes, I'm (attempting to) using PulseAudio.
