Hey guys!

I've just installed mangler yesterday, but could'nt really get my microphone working.
It's only mangler though, the microphone works just fine in every other application (skype, sound recorder).

How can it be?
I read in another topic, that if skype were open it could block mangler so it could'nt use ALSA. I tried to close skype, no luck though.

I've taken some screenshots of my setup.

Im using Arch Linux  32 bit, and using the mangler from the AUR.

Here is my amixer layout: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/351377/

The most likely cause is that your input device doesn't support hardware mixing and something else probably has it open.  If you run mangler from a terminal, when you push the PTT key, you'll probably see a "device busy" error message.  This is because something has the device locked.  You'll need to configure ALSA to do software mixing for your input device or find out what application has your input device open and kill it.

…. or use PulseAudio which solves all of those problems for you (and possibly creates all new and more exciting problems).

Yeah you were right!

This is the output from the terminal

┌─( klim ) – ( ~ )
└─> mangler
ALSA lib pcm.c:7397:(snd_pcm_set_params) Channels count (1) not available for CAPTURE: Invalid argument
alsa: snd_pcm_set_params() failed: Invalid argument

How do I find the conflicting application?

Interesting.  Well the good news is that it doesn't look like something has the device open.

The bad news is your input device doesn't seem to support mono input (???).  You can probably configure ALSA to mix down your input to a mono stream (which Mangler requires).

What happens when you select "Default" as the input device?  The default input device should automatically do software mixing and mono mixdown. Is there any particular reason you've explicitly selected the card as the input?

Strange..
I've choosen that, soundcard becuase I have 2 soundcards in my computer. An onboard and one card in the pci slot (Creative soundblaster XFI). I can't get the microphone to work no matter what in the soundblaster soundcard, so I run my sound through the soundblaster and use the onboard soundcard for the microphone. I know it might be a pretty strange setup, but it works just fine in skype as said.

The HDA-Intel are the onboard soundcard, and thats the input device im using in skype, so thought it would be the same here.

I've tried every other input device, Default aswell. None of them works, sometimes though there comes like a daemonic voice. As far as the people on the ventrilo can tell.

I believe Skype uses the old OSS sound system.  You can try that, but you really should fix your alsa configuration so that your default input device is the correct sound card.

Yeah it's actually workirng with the OSS using the /dev/dsp1 for input. Thanks

About the ALSA problem, I've really struggled with that. I spent 3 days finding this solution, just using the other soundcard and got ALSA configured right for it. If you know what might be wrong, I would be glad for some advice. The thing is, I can't do the trick on the capture in alsamixer. You know when you press space and some "M"s are comming up next to the bars.

I didn't want to start another thread since there was already one talking about microphone problems.  I am running on a HP dv7 series laptop and I can bind my PTT button and the icon lights up, but I get no audio.  I've tried all the options I have for input devices and audio sub-systems.  With Pulse and ALSA I get no errors.  With OSS I get an error message.  I can hear the other people in the room, but I don't hear the TTS when they enter a room.  I have a mic port and a built-in webcam/mic on the top of my screen.  I've tried plugging in a microphone, but I think I have a hardware configuration issue as the options for input/output devices don't seem to list anything relative to a microphone.  I am really not sure what information would be pertinent, so if someone could tell me what they need to know to help me resolve the issue that would probably be better than me rambling any further.

I'm going to assume you're using Ubuntu, but you did not specify which distro you're using.  Chances are that you need to configure your PulseAudio input device.  If you click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, go to sound preferences, then to the Input tab, you should be able to set your input device information.

Does your talk icon turn green?  If so, PulseAudio is definitely reading audio input from somewhere.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and yes the icon turns green.  I have logged in from one of my other computers and joined the same channel as my ubuntu laptop and I hear audio cues for when people join/leave and I can hear people talking, but they don't hear me.  My hardware is a HP dv7 series laptop and I've tried plugging in a mic, but neither the built-in mic or the plugged in one seems to be capturing audio.  I also tried a usb mic and the usb mic worked, but the usb mic is damaged so the audio is scratchy and intermitten.  The usb mic does give me hope for getting one of my better conditioned mics working.

The mic worked earlier using ALSA and now it doesn't.  Now I get an error:

alsa: snd_pcm_open() failed: Device or resource busy

When I try to use Pulse the icon goes green, but no matter what I do to the settings I get no audio.

This means you're not using the "default" device.  But really, you probably shouldn't be using ALSA if you have PulseAudio installed.  You need to figure out why Pulse isn't working.  Based one the information you've given so far, your PulseAudio input settings are wrong.

Well whatever the problem with the input configuration I am at a loss because PulseAudio lights up green, and everyone sees my mic go green, but no sound comes out.  The mic is not muted and I've tried a various volume levels.  It works with ALSA, but there is a lot of latency with the PTT.  When I use PulseAudio the latency is little to none between the key press and the icon turning green.  I would prefer to use PulseAudio for that reason.  ALSA the icon goes orange for 1-4 seconds then green and I can talk.  Running from a terminal window there are also no error messages or messages of any sort for that matter while using PulseAudio.

I opened gstreamer-properties and changed the audio all to PulseAudio and when back into Mangler and set everything to a specific device, but now PulseAudio has the latency between PTT key press and the actual transmission beginning like ALSA did.  Any suggestions for eliminating the latency?
